Camino de Santiago in summer: how to stay safe and cool

26/06/2025 0 comment

The Camino de Santiago is an unforgettable experience—but also a challenging one. In summer, there’s one extra factor that can really impact your pilgrimage: the heat.

High temperatures can make the Camino more demanding, so it’s essential to be prepared and to know how to protect yourself from the sun and the heat. That way, your only concern will be enjoying the journey, the landscapes, the food… and arriving in Santiago de Compostela with a big smile on your face.

Here are some simple, practical tips to help you walk safely and comfortably during the hottest months.
Because the Camino is meant to be lived—not suffered.

Top 10 Tips to beat the heat on the Camino de Santiago

1.-The early bird… you know the rest

2.-Drink before you’re thirsty

3.-Dress smart—with breathable technical fabrics

4.-Scarf, hat, sunglasses—essentials

5.-Happy feet, happy pilgrim

6.-SPF 50 sunscreen—don’t skimp

7.-Rest in the shade—even if you’re not tired

8.-Eat to recharge—even if you’re not hungry

9.-Listen to your body—and actually pay attention

10.-Always carry a small first-aid kit

Plan your Camino stages and schedule wisely

Walking in summer is not the same as walking in spring or autumn. Ideally, you should hit the road early to avoid the hottest hours (between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.).

If you’re walking the Camino with an agency like Rutas Meigas, it’s easier: with accommodations already booked, you can start early and arrive at your destination on time, without the stress of finding a place to stay.

You can also ask us to split long stages into two shorter ones to avoid walking too many kilometers during the hottest part of the day. The key is to match your pace and avoid overexertion.

Stay hydrated, even when you’re not thirsty

Your body is smart—but it can be tricky. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water.

Always carry a reusable bottle (or two, for longer stages). Along the Camino, there are many fountains—but make sure the water is safe to drink.

Take a few sips every 15–20 minutes to stay hydrated. Also, pack some fruit, nuts, or energy bars in your daypack to keep your energy up.

Smart clothing for health-conscious pilgrims

On the Camino in summer, what you wear can mean the difference between enjoying the walk—or wishing for the sweeper van to come get you (which would be almost sacrilege for a real pilgrim!).

Choose light, breathable, light-colored clothes. Technical t-shirts made of polyester or Coolmax are much better than cotton, which absorbs sweat and dries slowly.

Convertible trousers (that zip into shorts) are especially practical, particularly on routes like the Camino del Norte or the Camino Primitivo, where the weather can change quickly.

Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat or cap, UV-protection sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen (SPF 50)—and reapply it every two hours.

Take care of your feet on the Camino

If you’re doing an organized Camino with hotels, guesthouses, or rural accommodations and luggage transport included, you can take better care of your feet—switching between walking shoes and something more relaxing afterward.

During the walk, go for lightweight hiking boots or breathable trekking shoes with proper soles. Most importantly, wear shoes that are already broken in. Never start the Camino with brand-new footwear.

And don’t underestimate socks! Use technical, seamless, synthetic socks. They’ll save you from blisters—every pilgrim’s nightmare.

Schedule regular breaks along each stage

One of the great pleasures of the Camino is stopping to take in the scenery, grab a coffee, or chat with fellow pilgrims.

In summer, make sure those breaks are in the shade: under a porch, a leafy tree, or a cool café. Avoid sitting in direct sunlight. Even if you don’t feel exhausted, take breaks, hydrate, and pay attention to your body.

Try to plan your stages so you’re indoors during the hottest part of the day (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.). A rest in a cool terrace or your pre-booked accommodation can recharge you for the rest of the day.

A small First-Aid Kit for smart pilgrims

Even if you’re doing the Camino with full support, a small personal first-aid kit is always a good idea.

Include: Vaseline (great for preventing chafing), band-aids, pain relievers, an anti-inflammatory, gauze, and disinfectant. If you have allergies or any condition, don’t forget your regular medication.

One extra tip: bring a small scarf—it can be used to protect your head or neck, or soaked in cool water to refresh you during the hottest stretches.

The perks of a (well) organized Camino

When you choose a professionally organized Camino, staying cool becomes easier:

  • No worries about finding accommodation after each stage
  • You can plan flexible stages adapted to weather conditions
  • Luggage transfer means walking light (which is gold on hot days)
  • You always know where you’ll sleep: cool, comfortable, quality lodging

This gives you the freedom to enjoy the journey and adjust your pace—without the stress of rushing to secure a bed.

Enjoy the Camino in summer, with common sense

Each route on the Camino has its own summer magic: the northern beaches, the rías along the Portuguese Way, the vineyards of the Spiritual Variant, the mountains of the Primitivo… Summer is an incredible time to explore them all!

You just need to prepare well, listen to your body, and pace yourself. Because the Camino isn’t a race. It’s a personal journey.
And with the right care, it can be just as enjoyable—or even more so—in summer than in any other season.

Buen Camino!
